Hawks sweep doubleheader at Southwest Baptist

The Rockhurst softball team won both games of its doubleheader at Southwest Baptist Tuesday afternoon by scores of 13-3 and 4-1.

Leading 3-2 after five innings in game one, the Hawks rattled off back-to-back five-run innings in the sixth and seventh to break the game open.

A Payton Staggs single in the top of the sixth plated two runs to put the Hawks up 5-2. Emily Truitt followed with her seventh triple of the season, scoring two more to extend the Rockhurst lead to four. The line kept moving as Truitt scored on a Hanna Stam double.

Emily Clark, Megan Freitag and Staggs ignited the seventh inning rally as all three singled in runs.

Olivia Prather earned the win for the Hawks, pitching four innings (two earned runs, four hits, one strikeout). Paige Renner closed the game out, logging three innings (one earned run, five hits).

In game two, the Hawks took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first as Calli Wibbenmeyer singled home Staggs.

It was a pitcher's duel after that, as Rockhurst's Shannon Greene and SBU's Maddie Massanelli put up zeroes until Rockhurst rallied again in the late innings.

The Hawks plated a pair of runs in the fifth inning as Truitt singled home Freitag and Wibbenmeyer doubled home Truitt.

The Bearcats got on the board in the bottom of the fifth, Greene's only run allowed (1 ER, 3 H, 5 K), but the Hawks answered in the sixth as Staggs singled home Katie Wood.

Staggs finished the day with six hits (three-for-four with a walk, three RBIs and two runs scored in game one; three-for-three with one RBI and one run scored in game two).

Rockhurst (6-3) returns to action Friday vs. Missouri Southern and Northwest Missouri State in Joplin, Missouri.
