Rockhurst's comeback attempt against Truman State fell short Saturday afternoon, as the Bulldogs held on for a 74-66 win on Senior Day at Mason-Halpin Field House.
While the day belonged to the seniors, it was two Rockhurst freshmen --
Hailey Dolphin (15 points) and
Reagan Dodd (12 points) -- who helped the Hawks claw back into the game. In addition to providing points, the duo set the tone by defending with intensity and fighting for loose balls.
Madeline Ronshausen led the Hawks with 16 points, including a perfect eight-of-eight from the free throw line, while collecting five rebounds and four assists.
Tracy Monahan added nine points and six rebounds.
After the Bulldogs jumped out to a 22-8 lead, Rockhurst went on a 12-4 run, aided by 3-pointers from Dolphin and
Briahtia Sebek, to cut the TSU lead to six. Truman closed the first half on a 9-0 run, all 3-pointers, to take a 40-24 lead into the break.
Trailing by as many as 18 in the second half, Rockhurst chipped away as Dolphin and Ronshausen heated up. The Hawks cut the lead to six at 69-63 on a Monahan layup with 49 seconds left, but Truman iced the game away at the foul line, led by Sloane Totta (28 points, eight-of-11 FT).
