Second-quarter surge powers Hawks past Evangels

The Rockhurst Hawks returned to the win column, cruising past Mid-America Christian 72-54 Friday night at Mason-Halpin Field House.

After a tight first quarter, the Hawks exploded in the second quarter, outscoring the Evangels 26-5. Rockhurst rattled off 17 straight points, turning a 15-10 deficit into a 27-15 lead. Daly Sullivan and Madeline Ronshausen led the charge, combining for 15 points in the second quarter. The Hawks locked in defensively, holding MACU to just two-of-10 shooting in the second quarter. Coach Larry Park called for a zone defense and the Hawks were active, forcing 15 turnovers in the first half.

The Evangels pulled back within 11 in the third quarter, but Rockhurst responded with a 13-4 run, sparked by a pair of threes from Hailey Dolphin to stretch the lead back to 20, taking a 55-35 lead into the final quarter. The lead hovered around 20 most of the final quarter as Rockhurst showed its depth. Eleven Hawks scored in the game and nine different players knocked down threes.

Sullivan scored a game-high 18 points, including four-of-eight from beyond the arc. Ronshausen did a little bit of everything, tallying 13 points, six rebounds and a team-best five assists. Dolphin scored nine points, while Reagan Dodd added seven points and a game-high 10 rebounds.
