Cardinals edge Hawks in GLVC opener

The Rockhurst Hawks dropped their GLVC opener at William Jewell, 68-64, Tuesday night in Liberty, Missouri.

Hailey Dolphin (13 points) and Daly Sullivan (11 points) combined to shoot six-of-nine from three-point range, giving the Hawks a chance, but the Cardinals were too much in the second half.

Rockhurst jumped out to an 11-5 advantage and led much of the first half. Tied 13-13 early in the second quarter, Rockhurst surged back ahead with a 15-6 run, sparked by triples from Dolphin and Meghan Urbanski. The Hawks took a 31-23 lead into the break.

Jewell outscored Rockhurst 21-10 in the third quarter as the Cardinals locked in defensively. A 15-4 Jewell run saw the home team turn a 37-31 deficit into a 46-41 lead early in the fourth quarter. The Hawks would get back within two on multiple occasions in the fourth quarter, but could not complete the comeback as the Cardinals hung on for a four-point victory.

Urbanski finished with nine points, including four-of-four from the foul line. Coach Larry Park's team converted all 11 of their free throw attempts. Lauren Krissman tallied eight points and a team-high five assists. Paige Pendley chipped in eight points while Rachel Holden added seven points.

Rockhurst (3-3, 0-1 GLVC) returns to action Friday as Mid-America Christian visits Mason-Halpin Field House (5:30 p.m.).
