Hawks ride early surge to 86-79 win over Washburn

Backed by a 31-point first quarter and five players in double figures, Rockhurst held off Washburn for an 86-79 win Saturday night at Mason-Halpin Field House.

Madeline Ronshausen (game-high 20 points), Daly Sullivan (16 points), Molly Hummel (13 points), Reagan Dodd (10 points) and Meghan Urbanski (10 points) led the charge for the Hawks, who are finding their stride offensively, following an 88-point outing Wednesday.

Reagan Dodd, Lauren Krissman and Paige Pendley provided toughness and made winning hustle plays for Coach Larry Park's team.

Rockhurst opened the game on a 16-6 run, sparked by two three-pointers apiece from Ronshausen and Sullivan. Ronshausen set the tone, scoring 12 of the Hawks' 31 points in the first quarter.

The lead grew as large as 17 on a Krissman jumper early in the second quarter. Washburn would pull back within nine, but the Hawks stretched the lead back to 13 at the half, 48-35.

The Ichabods chipped away and would get as close as six in the third quarter. A Dodd layup gave the Hawks a 64-56 lead heading into the fourth quarter.

A 7-0 Washburn run pulled the visitors within three at 76-73 at the 3:09 mark. But Sullivan answered the bell for Rockhurst with a momentum-swinging three on the ensuing possession. Dodd crashed the offensive glass and converted four straight free throws to give the Hawks some breathing room.

Rockhurst took care of the ball down the stretch and iced the game away at the foul line, holding on for a seven-point win.
