Hawks bring depth and experience into 2019-20 season

Madeline Ronshausen and the Hawks open regular season play Friday, Nov. 8 in Nashville.
The Rockhurst women's basketball team will feature solid depth, returning nine players who averaged over 10 minutes a game last season, while also welcoming several newcomers as Coach Larry Park's team gets ready to begin the 2019-20 campaign.

Among the key returnees is senior guard Madeline Ronshausen. The sharpshooter from St. Louis posted team-highs in points (19.1 per game), rebounds (4.3 pg) and assists (2.9 pg) last season, earning First Team All-GLVC honors. Ronshausen converted on 67 of 160 three-pointers last year (41.9 percent), setting the tone for a Hawks team that led the nation in three-point percentage (40.3 percent). "Madeline is one of the best guards in the league," Park said. "She's right there."

Lauren Krissman returns this year, bringing experience and toughness to the Hawks' backcourt. The senior from Fort Smith, Arkansas was second on the team in rebounds (4.2 pg) and assists (2.0 pg) last season. Krissman was a key contributor towards the aforementioned three-point leader, shooting 41.4 percent from beyond the arc, highlighted by a 30-point game in a win over Avila where she shot 11-for-12 from the floor and six-for-six from three.

Fellow seniors Rachel Holden (17.8 minutes pg) and Mary Leigh Rock (11.0 minutes pg) are back in the frontcourt for the Hawks, providing an inside presence.

Park is excited about his rising sophomore class, including forward Reagan Dodd and guards Hailey Dolphin and Meghan Urbanski. "The experience they had last year, along with a desire to go back and improve themselves should really pay off for us," Park said.

Daly Sullivan is a newcomer the team expects to contribute right away. A junior guard transferring from Division I Mount Saint Mary's, Sullivan made 139 three-pointers the past two seasons and will add to an already potent outside attack for the Hawks. Park also praised Sullivan's ball-handling, saying, "[Daly] rarely turns the ball over, while still playing aggressively. She is just a really, really skilled player."

The team is also excited about its incoming freshmen class, including Paige Pendley, Lani Thompson and Molly Hummel, who Park expects to see the floor and potentially make an impact early on.

With Rockhurst's deep roster, Park says it's all about playing together and having an identity. The Hawks played well down the stretch last season, and that identity started with defending well in the halfcourt, allowing their high-powered offense to play more freely. In the Hawks' final three wins last season, they outscored opponents by an average margin of 20 points, 86.7 to 66.7.

The Hawks will look to carry that momentum into the new season when they open vs. Kentucky Wesleyan (Nov. 8) and Trevecca Nazarene (Nov. 9) at the Pops Duncan Classic in Nashville, Tennessee.
