Hawks' comeback vs. Missouri S&T falls short

Rockhurst dropped its GLVC home opener to Missouri S&T 77-75 Thursday night at Mason-Halpin Field House.

Madeline Ronshausen led all scorers with 19 points on six-of-12 from the field, three-of-five from 3-point range and four-for-four from the foul line. Marisa Lowe added 13 points, including five-for-five from the free throw line while also dishing out a team-high five assists.

Kaci German scored 10 points, and freshman Meghan Urbanski tallied nine points in her first game back from injury. Rachel Holden led the Hawks in rebounding with five.

The Hawks started fast, opening up a 12-2 lead behind eight quick points from Ronshausen. The Miners settled in and responded with a 14-2 run to take a 16-14 lead. The visitors from Rolla led 21-19 after one quarter and would see the lead grow as high as 11 at 36-25. S&T took a 44-34 lead into halftime.

Rockhurst would not go away quietly. A 9-0 run to start the third quarter pulled the home team within one. The Hawks regained the lead at 54-53 after a pair of Ronshausen free throws. Tied at 58 heading into the final quarter, S&T came out aggressive and took a four-point lead at 67-63. The seesaw battled continued as a Ronshausen 3-point field goal put Rockhurst ahead 75-73 with 2:39 remaining. Tight defense by the Miners down the stretch and back-to-back baskets from Mykala Baylor helped S&T escape with a two-point win.

  • S&T pulled down 39 rebounds to the Hawks' 26.
  • Rockhurst took care of the ball, committing just nine turnovers with Urbanski and Lauren Krissman providing solid ball-handling in a combined 43 minutes.
