No. 18 Lewis jumps out early in win over Hawks

The 18th-ranked Lewis Flyers opened the game on a 20-5 run and led Rockhurst wire-to-wire in an 83-59 victory Saturday at Neil Carey Arena in Romeoville, Illinois.

The GLVC's leading scorer, Jessica Kelliher, scored 20 points for Lewis in just 18 minutes of play, on an impressive eight-of-nine shooting from the field. Katie Gardner poured in a career-high 16 points for the Flyers.

Madeline Ronshausen (17 points) and Briahtia Sebek (12 points) led the way for Rockhurst on a combined 12-of-18 shooting, but didn't have enough help. Ronshausen and Lauren Krissman each pulled in a team-high four rebounds. Morgen Smith and Tracy Monahan added six points apiece.

It was an uphill battle for Rockhurst after the slow start, but the Hawks clawed back with a 16-6 run to pull within five at 26-21 in the second quarter. The Flyers responded with a 14-2 run to gain separation at 40-23. A pair of Ronshausen free throws cut the Lewis lead to 12 at 44-32 early in the third quarter, but the Flyers kept the Hawks at arm's length the rest of the way.

Inside the Box Score:
  • 22 Rockhurst turnovers led to 26 Lewis points.
  • The Hawks shot an impressive 47 percent from the field, but got away from their strengths, attempting just 12 3-pointers and getting to the foul line nine times.
