Tritons edge Hawks 71-65 behind clutch free throws

Missouri-St. Louis made nine-of-10 free throws down the stretch to rally for a 71-65 victory over Rockhurst Thursday night on the USML campus in St. Louis.

A Briahtia Sebek 3-pointer gave the Hawks a 65-62 lead with 52 seconds remaining, but UMSL scored the game's final nine points at the foul line in the final 44 seconds. Arielle Jackson led the Tritons with 26 points, including seven-of-seven free throws.

Sebek and Madeline Ronshausen combined for 40 points for Rockhurst. UMSL ran Ronshausen (22 points) off the 3-point line, but the junior guard found success inside the arc (seven-for-14) and at the foul line (five-for-six).

Ronshausen also led the Hawks in rebounds (six) and assists (five). Sebek (18 points) found openings outside, as the senior from Lincoln, Nebraska connected on four-of-five 3-pointers.

Meghan Urbanski gave Coach Larry Park good minutes, chipping in nine points on four-of-six shooting, with three assists and no turnovers.

The Tritons threw the first punch, as an 11-0 run put the home team ahead 22-9 in the first quarter. Trailing 26-14 to begin the second quarter, Rockhurst responded with a 17-5 run, as a Morgen Smith jumper evened the score at 31 apiece with 3:03 to play in the half. An Alex LaPorta 3-pointer in the closing seconds gave UMSL a 41-34 lead at the break.

UMSL maintained that seven-point lead at 51-44, but Rockhurst surged ahead with a 10-0 run, including buckets from Tracy Monahan, Urbanski and Ronshausen.

The Hawks led by as many as five points at 62-57 after an Urbanski jumper with 3:58 left to play, but the Tritons escaped with tough defense down the stretch and poise from the foul line.
