Hawks drop season opener to Fort Hays State

Sergio Villalba scored three goals for Fort Hays State to lead the visiting Tigers to a 4-2 victory over Rockhurst in the Hawks' season opener Sunday at Bourke Field.

Villalba scored found the nets twice on free kicks from 28 yards out. His first goal off a free kick carried over the Rockhurst wall and found the upper left side of the goal in the 24th minute. His second goal, in the 38th minute, was a shot off the right post to give Fort Hays a 2-1 lead. Villaba's third goal deflected off the Rockhurst wall and beat the keeper to just inside the left post in the 77th minute.

Federico Verlicchi and Gianluca Bottoni scored Rockhurst's two goals. Verlichi knocked in a shot from six yards out off a right cross from freshman Noah Mabry in the 35th minute. Bottoni evened the game at 2-2 in the 49th minute when he deflected in a shot by Mabry.

Rockhurst outshot the Tigers, 11-9. Bottoni, Verlichi, Turner Hall and Trevor Cissell had two shots apiece.

The third-ranked Hawks (0-1) next play at Lindenwood on Tuesday afternoon in St. Charles, Missouri.
