Shootout win lifts Hawks into GLVC Tournament finals

Seventh-seeded Rockhurst is moving on to the finals in the 2018 GLVC Women's Soccer Tournament. The Hawks advanced to Sunday's finals with a 4-3 shootout victory over third-seeded Southern Indiana in the semifinals of the GLVC Tournament Friday night in Jeffersonville, Indiana.

The Hawks (10-7-2) will meet fifth-seeded Bellarmine (11-5-3) in Sunday's championship game at 3 p.m. local time (2 p.m. CST). The winner will receive an automatic berth in the 2018 NCAA Division II national tournament.

Caroline Romme made the winning penalty kick in the fifth round. Cathy Rometti, Mackenzie Moore and Stephanie Ostrander also made their PKs in the shootout for the Hawks. Junior keeper Rose Breneny stopped two Southern Indiana penalty kicks.

Rockhurst and Southern Indiana battled to a 1-1 tie after 110 minutes. McKenna Leetch tied the score at 1-1 less than seven minutes into the second half. The sophomore midfielder notched her seventh goal of the season off a shot in the box off a left cross from Ostrander. The Screaming Eagles jumped in front 1-0 with a goal in the seventh minute.


Rockhurst posted 13 shots and seven shots on goal. The Screaming Eagles collected 19 shots and 10 shots on goal. Leetch, Ostrander, Cate Sommerhoff, Colleen Pikus and Elle Guttmann led the Hawks with two shots apiece. Breheny finished with nine saves.
