Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Overtime goal gives Hawks their first GLVC Women's Soccer title

The Rockhurst Hawks captured their first GLVC Women's Soccer Championship in dramatic fashion Sunday in Jeffersonville, Indiana. Maddie Dierkes scored the winning goal in overtime to give the seventh-seeded Hawks a 1-0 victory over the fifth-seeded Bellarmine Knights.

The Hawks (11-7-2) have earned an automatic bid to the 2018 NCAA Division II national tournament. The 56-team tournament bracket will be announced on Monday at 5:30 p.n. on www.ncaa.com.

Dierkes, a senior midfielder, knocked in a shot from three yards out inside the left post for her third goal of the season. The goal was set up off a long free kick from Cathy Rometti from the far right side of the field. The golden goal was scored with 2:20 left in the first overtime period.

Rockhurst posted 10 shots and five shots on goal. The Knights (11-6-3) collected nine shots and two shots on goal. McKenna Leetch, Stephanie Ostrander and Hannah Byrne led the Hawks with two shots apiece. Rosie Breheny finished with two saves in posting her fourth shutout of the season.
