Box Score Freshmen Curtis Lewis and Eddie Muench combined for 47 points to help rally Rockhurst to an 84-80 victory over Newman Saturday in Wichita, Kansas.
A layup by Alex Hagan with nine seconds left gave the Hawks an 82-80 lead. Muench iced the road win by sinking two free throws with one second on the clock.
Free throw shooting was the difference in the game. Rockhurst connected on 34-of-43 free throws while Newman was 13-of-17 at the charity stripe.
The Hawks outscored Newman 46-34 in the second half to overcome a 46-38 halftime deficit. Rockhurst went on an 11-1 run to take its first lead in the second half with 13:55 left to play.
"I was proud of our ability to come together after halftime and rally for the win,"Â said Rockhurst coach Drew Diener. "The first half was frustrating from a defensive perspective. We showed good toughness in the second half. We made big shots late off of unselfish play. That's a great win for us."
Lewis led the Hawks with a season-high 24 points, six rebounds and three assists. Muench scored a season-high 23 points behind five-of-eight 3-pointers. Connor Evans and Quinton Curry each posted nine points. Hagan added eight points and six rebounds.
Rockhurst shot 43.8 percent from the field (21 of 48) and 44.4 percent from behind the 3-point line (eight of 18). Newman made 27 of 51 field goals (52.9 percent) and 13 of 26 3-pointers (50.0 percent).
The Hawks (8-4, 2-1 GLVC) return home to host William Jewell on Thursday, Jan. 4.
