Free throws carry Hawks past Avila, 75-68

A near perfect night at the free-throw line carried Rockhurst to a 75-68 victory over Avila Monday night at RU's Mason-Halpin Field House.

The Hawks sank 26 of 29 free throws, including nine of 10 in the fourth quarter, to hold off a fourth quarter comeback by Avila.

Rockhurst enjoyed a comfortable 66-49 lead early in the fourth quarter before Avila went on a 15-4 run to cut the Hawks' lead to six points with 2:30 left to play. Madeline Ronshausen hit a jumper and three free throws in the final 1:45 to secure the win.

Ronshausen led the Hawks with 14 points, four rebounds and five assists. Freshman Briahtia Sebek scored 13 points on five-of-six shooting. Morgan Harwood collected 11 points and four rebounds.

Jillian Myers posted nine points, eight rebounds and four steals. Mary Leigh Rock tallied nine points and eight rebounds.

Rockhurst shot 39.3 percent from the field (22 of 56) and 27.8 percent from behind the 3-point line (5 of 18). Avila hit 23 of 57 shots (40.4 percent) and five of 22 3-pointers (22.87 percent).

The Hawks (3-1) play Northwest Missouri State in the Fairfield Inn Thanksgiving Classic on Friday in St. Joseph, Missouri.
