Madeline Ronshausen scored a career-high 27 points to lead Rockhurst to an 83-73 victory over Saint Mary in the Hawks' season opener Monday night at RU's Mason-Halpin Field House.

Ronshausen scored 14 points on six-of-eight shooting to give the Hawks a 29-8 lead after the first quarter. The sophomore guard made five-of-six free throws in the final minute to secure the victory.

Saint Mary opened the fourth quarter with an 18-6 run to pull within two points, 69-67, with 3:53 left to play. Rockhurst sank 10 of 12 free throws in the final two minutes to pull away from the Spires.

Sophomore center Kaci German posted career highs in points (18) and rebounds (11). Sophomore forward Tracy Monahan collected 15 points and six rebounds. Senior guard Jillian Myers tallied nine points, eight assists and seven rebounds.

Rockhurst shot 45.0 percent from the field (27 of 60) and 75.0 percent at the free-throw line (24 of 32). Saint Mary hit 26 of 64 shots (40.6 percent) and 17 of 23 free throws (73.9 percent).

The Hawks (1-0) play at Washburn Friday night.
