Box Score

Freshman guard Curtis Lewis scored 16 of his game-high 21 points in the second half to lead Rockhurst to a season-opening 88-78 victory over Purdue Northwest Friday night in the GLVC-GLIAC Tip-Off Classic in Westville, Indiana.

Lewis scored five points in less than two minutes to key a 19-4 run to open the second half as the Hawks took a 53-39 lead with 14:39 left in the game.

Rockhurst ended up shooting 52.8 percent from the field in the second half. The Hawks scored 26 points in the paint in the final 20 minutes after shooting 38.7 percent and turning the ball over eight times in the first half.

"We played pretty inconsistent tonight on both ends of the floor," said Rockhurst coach Drew Diener. "I thought there were some bright moments throughout the game both individually and team-wise, but not a great 40-minute performance."

Auston Rushing scored 18 points on seven-of-13 shooting while scoring 12 points in the first half. Alex Hagan finished with 15 points and 15 rebounds, including collecting nine offensive rebounds.

"I think the greatest thing that happened in this game was Hagan's dominance on the offensive and defensive glass," Diener added. "That has been something we have stressed with this year's team. I believe we have the personnel to be a great rebounding team. He was desperate on the glass tonight."

Quinton Curry and Connor Evans combined for 20 points and eight rebounds. Freshman forward Eddie Muench came off the bench to add seven points and four rebounds.

The Hawks shot 46.3 percent from the field (31 of 67) and 30.8 percent on 3-pointers (eight of 26). The Pride hit 48.4 percent on their field goals (30 of 62) and 38.5 percent from beyond the 3-point line (10 of 26). Rockhurst won the battle of the boards, 46-30.

Rockhurst (1-0) will play Davenport (0-1) on the second day of the GLVC-GLIAC Tip-Off Classic Saturday afternoon.
