Rockhurst men take 9-6 record to Missouri S&T

Malachi Nix is averaging 13.1 points and 3.5 assists per game.
The Rockhurst Hawks (9-6, 3-4 GLVC) meet the Missouri S&T Miners (7-7, 1-6 GLVC) at 7:30 p.m. tonight in Rolla, Mo., in a Great Lakes Valley Conference West Division matchup.

The Miners won their last meeting, 73-62, at Rockhurst on Jan. 23, 2016. Rockhurst leads the all-time series, 18-12.

The Hawks have won six of their last eight games dating back to Dec. 7. Junior forward Alex Hagan leads the Hawks in scoring (17.0) and rebounding (7.7). Hagan posted back-to-back double-doubles in points-rebounds last week in home wins over McKendree and Illinois Springfield. Hagan is averaging 20.0 points and 8.7 rebounds in his last three games. He scored a season-high 26 points against Nebraska Wesleyan on Nov. 12.

Senior guard Malachi Nix is averaging 13.1 points and 3.5 assists per game. Nix has posted 61 points (20.3 pg) and 11 assists (3.8 pg) in his last three games. Nix ranks 28th in scoring, 14th in assists, ninth in 3-point field goal percentage (48.9), and 11th in assist/turnover ratio (1.7) in the GLVC. Junior center Gabe Brown leads the GLVC and ranks tied for 30th in the nation in blocked shots (2.0). Junior guard Travis House ranks ninth in 3-point field goals made (2.7) in the GLVC. Sophomore forward Connor Evans is tied for 10th in steals (1.4) in the GLVC. Rockhurst ranks fifth in 3-point field goals made (9.5) and fifth in blocked shots (3.5) in the GLVC.

Alex Hagan scored 22 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to lead Rockhurst to a 72-65 victory over Illinois Springfield Saturday in Kansas City. He posted his third double-double of the season. Rockhurst led by 16 (51-35) with 11:41 left in the game before holding off a Springfield rally in the final six minutes. The Hawks iced the win by hitting five-of-six free throws in the final minute. Kaleb Warner collected 17 points, four rebounds and three assists. Malachi Nix tallied 11 points, five rebounds, five assists and three steals. Connor Evans added eight points, six rebounds and three assists. Rockhurst shot 41.4 percent from the field and 75.0 percent on free throws.

The Hawks close out their quick road trip on Saturday at Drury, Rockhurst returns home to face  Missouri-St. Louis on Jan. 26) and Maryville  on Jan. 28). The Hawks open February with home games against Lewis and Wisconsin-Parkside before closing out the regular season with five road games.
