Rockhurst opens GLVC Tournament at Southern Indiana

The ninth-seeded Rockhurst Hawks (12-14, 7-11 GLVC) meet the eighth-seeded Southern Indiana Screaming Eagles (18-10, 10-8 GLVC) in a first-round game in the GLVC Men's Basketball Tournament at 2 p.m. Sunday (February 28) at the Physical Activites Center in Evansville, Indiana.

This marks the fifth appearance in the GLVC Tournament for the Hawks, who are 1-4 all-time in the tournament. The Eagles won their last meeting, 79-71, earlier this season at Rockhurst. Southern Indiana leads the all-time series, 15-1.

"Our guys are ready to go," said Rockhurst coach Drew Diener. "We are not content to make the tournament, we want to advance. I think we have the right mindset. Southern Indiana is hot right now. We have to play very well."

Senior forward Dominique Washington ranks seventh in scoring (18.0) and 17th in rebounding (5.8) in the GLVC. Junior guard Malachi Nix stands first in assists (5.5), 13th in steals (1.4), 10th in assist/turnover ratio and 10th in minutes played (32.2) in the GLVC. Freshman guard Austin LeVan ranks 28th in scoring (12.2), third in free throw percentage (90.0) and seventh in 3-point field goals made (2.2) in the GLVC.

Sophomore forward Alex Hagan ranks seventh in rebounding (6.9) and fourth in offensive rebounds (2.5) in the GLVC. Junior forward Adam Fatkin stands sixth in field goal percentage (57.6) in the GLVC. The Hawks rank third in scoring defense (73.5) and third in 3-point field goal percentage defense (33.0) in the GLVC.

Rockhurst ended the regular season with an 86-69 loss at home to William Jewell on Thursday. Jewell outscored the Hawks 48-25 in the second half to overcome a 44-38 halftime deficit. LeVan led the Hawks with 16 points on four-of-nine shooting. Washington posted 14 points and five rebounds. Nix collected with 11 points, four rebounds and five assists. Alex Hagan added seven points and six rebounds. Rockhurst shot 40.0 percent from the field (24 of 60) and 41.7 percent on 3-point shots (10 of 24).
