Hawks survive PK shootout to capture NCAA Midwest Regional

Box Score Top-seeded Rockhurst defeated sixth-seeded Drury in penalty kicks, 5-4, to capture its fourth NCAA Division II Midwest Regional Championship Friday at the Fort Hays State University Soccer Stadium in Hays, Kan.

Rockhurst has now won four of the past six Midwest Regional Championships. The Hawks (17-2-3) will face Central Region champion Fort Hays State (14-4-1) in the NCAA national quarterfinals on Sunday at 1 p.m. in Hays for a right to advance to the national semifinals in Kansas City on Dec. 1.

Rockhurst and Drury (13-4-4) battled to a 1-1 tie after two overtime periods. The Hawks made five of their seven penalty kicks. Michael Panarisi made the winning penalty kick in the seventh round. Adam Michel, Mitch Moncada, Connor Mullen and Sal Caruso also connected on their penalty shots for the Hawks.

Drury took a 1-0 lead in the 27th minute on a header shot by Joe Fehr. Rockhurst tied the score in the 84th minute on a header shot by Mitch Moncada with assists from Michel and Kaleb Jackson.

Rockhurst outshot Drury, 14-8. Ben McDonald led the Hawks with three shots. The Hawks' Logan Feldmann stopped three shots, while Drury keeper Nicholas Helin made five saves.
