Rockhurst women host Lincoln in season opener

Mary Dineen is one of five returning starters for the Hawks.
The Rockhurst Hawks host the Lincoln Blue Tigers in a season opener for both schools at 6 p.m. Saturday. This is the 24th meeting between the Hawks and Blue Tigers. Lincoln owns a 12-11 edge in the all-time series. The Blue Tigers defeated Rockhurst, 50-49, last season in Jefferson City, Missouri.

Rockhurst returns five starters and 10 letterwinners from its 2015-16 team that finished 15-13 overall and reached the GLVC Tournament quarterfinals for the first time in school history. The Hawks were picked to finish fourth in the GLVC Preseason Coaches' Poll. Senior guard Mary Dineen averaged 18.4 points and 3.1 rebounds per game. A preseason All-American, Dineen ranked in the top five in the GLVC in scoring, 3-point field goals made (2.8), free throw percentage (87.1) and 3-point field goal percentage (45.1). Junior guard Jillian Myers led the GLVC and ranked fifth nationally in steals (3.4). Myers also ranked sixth in assists (4.2) in the GLVC. Sophomore forward Marisa Lowe ranked in the top 10 in the GLVC in 3-point field goals made (2.7) and 3-point field goal percentage (40.3) in the GLVC. Senior center Haleigh Cindrich ranked among the GLVC leaders in blocked shots (1.4).

"We have a lot of people back, but we will have a young feel to the team," said Rockhurst coach Larry Park, who begins his eighth season at Rockhurst. "We have five freshmen who will likely see a lot of minutes, We hope to build on the success from last year. I think we have a chance to be solid this year."

Lincoln returns six players from last year, including three seniors. Five new players joined Lincoln over the off-season and Shamirah Johnson who missed last season with an injury, also returns for her senior year. Lincoln has a new coaching staff, led by Avana McWilliams who most recently was an assistant at NCAA Division I South Carolina Upstate. The last time Lincoln opened its season vs. Rockhurst was in 2010-11, with the Blue Tigers winning, 59-57, in Jefferson City. Hunter Yoakum is on pace to become the fourth Blue Tiger ever to score 1,000 career points and is coming off a 2015-16 season in which she averaged 10.5 points per contest. Azaria Nave played in all 28 games last year and averaged 7.7 points and 2.2 assists.
