Box Score Bellarmine outscored Rockhurst by 20 points at the foul line to hold off the Hawks for a 72-65 victory Saturday at Mason-Halpin Field House.
The 11th-ranked Knights made their last field goal of the day with 6:44 left to take a 56-55 lead. Bellarmine's last 16 points came via the free-throw line over the final 5:20. The Knights shot 39 free throws and made 28 for the game, while the Hawks were eight-of-10 at the charity stripe.
"I thought we played a great game," said Rockhurst coach Drew Diener. "We didn't shoot great in the first half but we were playing unselfish and taking good shots. We guarded really hard for 40 minutes. We were down double digits for the majority of the first half and we continued to fight and compete. We believed in our game plan and it got us back in the game. We got better today."
Josh Roberts hit a 3-pointer to cap a 24-6 run to give the Hawks a 55-52 lead with 7:31 left in the game. Bellarmine jumped out to a 10-0 lead and led 35-23 at halftime as Rockhurst shot 25 percent from the field in the first half.
Dominique Washington led the Hawks with 17 points and eight rebounds. Washington connected on seven-of-14 field goals. Roberts scored 13 points while hitting three-of-seven 3-point shots. Connor Evans scored eight points off the bench. Malachi Nix posted seven points, seven assists and four steals.
Rockhurst shot 38.1 percent from the field (24 of 63). Bellarmine made 28-of-54 field goals (48.8 percent). Rusty Troutman paced the Knights with 20 points, nine rebounds and four assists.
The Hawks, 6-6 and 1-3 in the GLVC, play at Illinois Springfield on Thursday, January 14.
