Hawks host USI in conference home opener

Alex Hagan leads the GLVC in field goal percentage.
The Rockhurst Hawks (6-4, 1-1 GLVC) host the Southern Indiana Screaming Eagles (10-2, 2-0 GLVC) in their confernce home opener at 7:30 p.m. Thursday (January 7). Southern Indiana defeated the Hawks, 75-64, last year at Southern Indiana. The Eagles lead the all-time series, 14-1.
 
"These guys are real good again this year," said Rockhurst coach Drew Diener. "They can shoot, they rebound well and they have good guards that take care of the ball. I think our guys are ready to see how we stack up. They have had a great program going there for a long time."
The Screaming Eagles are coming off a 102-67 victory at home over Purdue North Central on Dec. 30. Junior guard Jeril Taylor led Southern Indiana with 24 points and 10 rebounds. Taylor leads the Eagles in scoring (16.3, 11th in GLVC), rebounding (8.3, sixth in GLVC) and steals (2.0, tied for second in GLVC). Sophomore guard Bobo Drummond ranks fourth in assists (4.3) in the GLVC. Rodney Watson is in his seventh year as USI's head coach.

Senior forward Dominique Washington leads the Hawks in scoring (17.4). Junior guard Malachi Nix ranks first in assists (5.5), 12th in steals (1.5) and 19th in scoring (13.8) in the GLVC. Freshman guard Austin LeVan ranks 12th in scoring (15.8), fourth in 3-point field goals made (3.0) and is tied for third in free throw percentage (90.9) in the GLVC. Sophomore forward Alex Hagan stands first in field goal percentage (67.5) and is tied for 15th in rebounding (5.9) in the GLVC. Junior forward Adam Fatkin ranks eighth in field goal percentage (56.9) and is tied for 24th in rebounding (5.2) in the GLVC.

A 20-0 run in the second half carried Rockhurst to a 75-60 victory over Grand View Saturday at Mason-Halpin. Dominique Washington led the Hawks with 17 points and five rebounds. Josh Roberts scored a season-high 13 points on five-of-nine shooting. Adam Fatkin posted 12 points and seven rebounds. Malachi Nix collected eight points, four rebounds and three assists. Freshman Connor Evans added seven points, six rebounds, three assists and two steals. Rockhurst shot 46.0 percent from the field (29 of 63) and connected on nine-of-12 free throws.
