Box Score Rockhurst ran into a hot-shooting Newman team Saturday in Wichita, Kansas, in falling to the Jets 92-64. Newman shot 53.4 percent from the field, including 65.5 percent in the first half.
Newman jumped out to a 28-12 lead midway through the first half and led 52-33 at halftime. The Hawks never could get closer than 15 points in the second half.
"That wasn't fun. We had poor mentality out of the gate," said Rockhurst coach Drew Diener. "I don't think we played as desperate as our previous games. Newman has a great team and really felt good against us all night long. We should be better than we showed tonight."
Malachi Nix led the Hawks with 20 points and two steals. The junior guard made six-of-11 field goals and seven-of-eight free throws. Alex Hagan collected 12 points and four rebounds. Adam Fatkin added 10 points and five rebounds.
Rockhurst shot 35.3 percent from the field (18 of 51) and 80.6 percent from the free-throw line (25 of 31). Newman hit 31-of-58 field goals and 23-of-29 free throws (79.3 percent). Five players scored in double figures for the Jets.
