Box Score Rockhurst jumped out to a 14-point halftime lead in rolling to a 75-51 victory over Washburn Saturday in Topeka, Kan.
Austin LeVan and Malachi Nix combined for 21 points to give the Hawks a 37-23 lead at halftime. Rockhurst shot 50 percent and held to Washburn to 25.8 percent shooting in the first half. The Hawks outscored Washburn, 38-28, in the second half.
"We really communicated and guarded today," said Rockhurst coach Drew Diener. "Our guys were really locked in to our defensive game plan. It was fun to watch. We got great efforts off the bench. I think we are making good progress."
LeVan led the Hawks with 21 points and five rebounds. The freshman reserve guard made four-of-10 field goals and 11-of-12 free throws. Nix posted 18 points behind four 3-point field goals.
Alex Hagan collected 12 points and 11 rebounds his first college start. Josh Roberts scored 11 points while canning three 3-point shots. John Burke tallied a team-high four assists.
Rockhurst shot 48.1 percent from the field (25 of 52) and 73.7 percent from the free-throw line (14 of 19). Washburn made 16-of-51 field goals (31.4 percent) and 17-of-25 free throws (68.0 percent). Javion Blake paced the Ichabods with nine points.
The Hawks, 2-1, return home to host Missouri Southern on Monday at 6 p.m.
