Hawks falter twice in conference opener

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Saint Joseph's scored eight runs in the fifth inning to rally for an 11-7 victory over Rockhurst in the first game of a conference-opening doubleheader Sunday at RU's Loyola Park. The Pumas also rallied to win the second game, 8-4.

The Hawks jumped out to a 7-3 lead in the first game behind the hitting of Lauren Cairo and Liz Desloge. Cairo homered twice and drove in three runs. Desloge smashed a two-run homer in the third. Kelsey Dean hit an RBI double and Katelyn Bakey added a run-scoring single in the fifth.

In the second game, the Hawks led 4-3 in the fourth after scoring an unearned run. The Pumas scored three runs in the fourth and two runs in the sixth. Demi Plathe led the Hawks with three hits, highlighted by a leadoff home run in the first inning. Cairo added two hits to the 10-hit Rockhurst attack.

The Hawks, 3-9 and 0-2 in the GLVC, host Saint Mary on Wednesday at 3 p.m.
