Hawks rally past Jewell to earn first-ever berth in GLVC Tournament

Rockhurst's five seniors helped carry the Hawks to a victory over William Jewell on Senior Night.
Box Score The Rockhurst women's basketball team rallied in the second half to defeat William Jewell 87-80 Thursday night and earned their first-ever berth in the Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament.

Rockhurst (9-17) will play at Missouri-St. Louis (20-6) on Sunday at 1 p.m. in the first round of the GLVC Tournament. The winner will advance to the GLVC quarterfinals on Thursday, March 6 in Evansville, Ind.

Down 46-39 at halftime, the Hawks took their first lead of the second half at 69-68 on a free throw by Kendall Hart at the 8:59 mark. After Jewell grabbed a 76-74 lead with 3:51 left, the Hawks closed the game on a 13-4 run.

A three-pointer by Hart gave Rockhurst a 79-76 lead at 2:38 mark. A tip-in by Becky Squiers and two free throws from Susan Hohenadel put the Hawks in front 83-77 with 55 seconds remaining. Mary Dineen and Hart combined to sink four free throws in the final 24 seconds.

Dineen, who missed RU's last game with a leg injury, led the Hawks with 17 points while hitting four-of-10 field goals. Seniors Allison Streich (15 points and seven rebounds) and Squiers (12 points and six rebounds) played a huge role in the win in their final home games.

Hart also scored in double figures with 14 points. Taylor Skala finished with eight points, four assists and two steals. Lauren Meyers added six points, six rebounds and four assists.

Rockhurst shot 46.6 percent from the field (27 of 58) and made 29 of 34 free throws (85.3 percent). Jewell also made 27 of 58 field goals, while going 18 of 22 at the foul line (81.8 percent).
