Late rally by Hawks falls short at Missouri Western

Mary Dineen led the Hawks 14 points and seven rebounds.

Missouri Western survived a late Rockhurst rally to edge the Hawks 71-69 Thursday night in St. Joseph, Mo.

The Hawks went on an 11-4 run, capped by a 3-pointer by freshman Brooke Denton, to pull within 68-65 with 1:18 left in the game. Denton missed a game-tying 3-pointer with 24 seconds left. Western iced the game with a free throw with 17 seconds left.

Mary Dineen led the Hawks with 14 points and seven rebounds. Jillian Myers posted 13 points, six rebounds and four assists. Becca Strobbe also scored 13 points. Kendall Hart added 12 points and four steals.

The Hawks shot 41.1 percent from the field (23-of-56) and 80.0 percent from the foul line (12-of-15). Western outscored Rockhurst 36-14 in the paint while shooting 45.8 percent from the field (27-of-59).

Rockhurst (1-2) will play an exhibition game at Missouri-Kansas City on Saturday.
