Box Score Southern Indiana's strong inside game led the eighth-ranked Screaming Eagles to an 86-68 victory over Rockhurst in a conference home opener Friday night at RU's Mason-Halpin Field House.
The Eagles scored 42 points in the paint behind the play of junior forward Aaron Nelson, who finished with 15 points and 15 rebounds, and senior forward Orlando Rutledge, who added 17 points and eight rebounds.
After Rockhurst tied the score at 25-all, Southern Indiana scored 11 unanswered points while taking a 39-32 halftime lead. The Eagles opened on the second half on a 20-7 lead to grab a 20-point lead.
Rockhurst shot 36.5 percent from the field (23 of 63), while Southern Indiana made 30 of 65 field goals (46.2 percent). The Eagles also outrebounded the Hawks, 50-29.
Brandon McCann paced the Hawks with 19 points, eight rebounds and seven assists. Liam Duffy scored 10 points behind three-of-four three-point shots.
The Hawks, 4-5 and 0-2 in the GLVC, host Bellarmine on Sunday, Jan. 5 at 3 p.m.
