Rockhurst opens season with 2-1 win at home

The Rockhurst Hawks opened their 2013 women's soccer season with a 2-1 win over Washburn Wednesday night at RU's Bourke Field.

Junior forward Caroline Brandt gave the Hawks a 1-0 lead in the 35th minute with an assist from Kinsley Fitzpatrick. Brandt found the back right of the net with a shot from 12 yards out. Sophomore forward Brandi Van Booven put Rockhurst in front 2-0 early in the second half. She knocked in a shot in front of the net with a nice cross from Taylor Skala.

Washburn scored on a free kick from 20 yards out in the 86th minute to cut Rockhurst's lead in half. Rockhurst outshot Washburn 18-5 while posting eight shots on goal. Julia Bartolacci, Kristin Wolff and Fitzpatrick led Rockhurst with three shots apiece. Jamison Wipke and Van Booven both added two shots.

The Hawks, 1-0, open conference play at home on Friday against Missouri S&T at 5 p.m.
