Jacob Lawson joined Rockhurst University on July 6, 2026, as the Assistant Athletic Director for Communications, bringing extensive experience in athletic communications and department leadership.
Prior to joining Rockhurst, Lawson served as the first full-time Assistant Athletic Director and Sports Information Director at Colby (Kan.) Community College. There, he built and led the athletic communications department while overseeing communications and branding for all 14 varsity sports. Lawson directed the department's daily operations, managed media relations, website administration, social media strategy, photography, videography, live event coverage, and statistical reporting. He also oversaw athletic facilities and worked closely alongside the Athletic Director on departmental operations, strategic initiatives, and administrative projects, serving as a key member of the leadership team.
Before Colby, Lawson was the Sports Information Graduate Assistant at Fort Hays State University, where he gained valuable NCAA Division II experience while earning a Master of Business Administration with a concentration in Leadership Studies. Supporting one of the nation's largest Division II athletic departments, he managed social media, maintained the athletics website, coordinated statistical reporting, assisted with game day operations, and supported media relations for the Tigers.
Lawson also completed a full-time communications internship with Kansas Athletics in 2023 before earning a Bachelor of Science in Sport Management with a minor in Business from the University of Kansas.
A native of Carlsbad, California, Lawson is passionate about building relationships across campus and telling the stories of student-athletes through creative, consistent, and impactful communication. At Rockhurst, he oversees the strategic communications efforts for all 22 varsity sports, helping elevate the Hawks' brand while supporting student-athletes, coaches, and the University's mission.
Outside of athletics, Lawson enjoys running, cooking, and playing basketball.
