Women's Soccer return strong nucleus in 2023

Anna Lantz led the Hawks with nine goals last season.
The 2023 Rockhurst women's soccer roster is loaded with veterans and a strong freshmen class. Coach Greg Herdlick returns 10 starters from last year's squad, which won the Great Lakes Valley Conference regular season championship.

"I think it will be exciting year," said Herdlick, whose teams have won 250 games over the past 24 seasons. "How well we integrate our returners with our freshmen group will determine how strong our season will be this year."

Offensively, the Hawks return their top four goal scorers including sophomore forward Anna Lantz, who scored nine goals and was named the GLVC Freshman of the Year. Juniors Olivia Schwarzen and Gabby Hennessy, and sophomore Lizzo Rosenthal combined for 12 goals and four assists.

Defender Greta Seal returns for her fourth season after being named the GLVC Defensive Player of the Year. Halle Mallum, Jacqueline Nieters and Patti Ehrnman provide experience on defense. Freshmen defender Quinn Conroy will see action right away.

The midfield will be strong with Schwarzen, Hennessey, Rosenthal and Olivia Van Belle. Freshmen Sarah Gilmore, Caitlyn Smith and Jacie Tottleben add depth to the midfield.

Seniors Elle Kimball and Hanna Jones join Lantz at the forward spot. Junior Taylor James returns as the starting goalkeeper.

Rockhurst hopes to get back to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2019. The Hawks just missed out last year after getting upset in the first round of the GLVC Tournament.

"There was definitely some disappointment in how our season ended last year," Herdlick said. "It's not very common that you win your conference and you don't get a bid to nationals. We hope to make amends for that and have a solid non-conference season to get us geared for the (conference) season."

The RU women opened the season last weekend with a 2-0 win over Northern State and a 0-0 tie with Bemidji State. The Hawks host Missouri Western on Friday (5 p.m.) and Oklahoma Christian on Sunday (noon).

"There is a lot of excitement based on last year's results. On paper we look good, but we will have to back that up on the field," added Herdlick.
