Rockhurst, William Jewell to compete for inaugural KC Crown presented by Mammoth Sports Construction

Rockhurst and William Jewell will compete for the inaugural Kansas City Crown trophy in 2022-23.
Rockhurst University and William Jewell College have joined together to create the Kansas City Crown, presented by Mammoth Sports Construction, with the inaugural competition set for the 2022-23 season.

The two institutions, located just 21 miles from one another in the Kansas City metro, have enjoyed a healthy rivalry throughout their respective athletics histories, dating back to the early 1900s. In 2011, William Jewell joined the Great Lakes Valley Conference leading to annual meetings in more than 10 sports, with men's and women's lacrosse adding to that total beginning in 2024.

"Rockhurst and William Jewell are two well respected NCAA Division II institutions in one of the most active sports cities in the United States. We are excited about building this cross-city rivalry, engaging the sports community, and enhancing our game environments," added Rockhurst Athletics Director Kristy Bayer.

Each school will battle for up to 20 regular season points, depending on number of conference meetings, awarded upon a win in a GLVC contest, with bonus points up for grabs when meeting in a postseason Conference Tournament. All ties or draws will split the point while a tie in the final standings will be broken by the highest finish in the Commissioner's Cup. Non-conference scrimmages, tournaments or other regular season meetings will not count toward the standings.

Additionally, students from each school will be admitted free during all Rockhurst-Jewell games when presenting a valid student ID at the gate, except for conference tournaments, which is expected to amplify the game experience for student-athletes and fans alike.

"Our teams have always enjoyed the rivalry with Rockhurst over the years and the Kansas City Crown puts something a little extra on the line and adds to that experience," said William Jewell Director of Athletics Tom Eisenhauer.

Mammoth Sports Construction has joined the effort as the presenting sponsor of the Kansas City Crown with Chief Revenue Officer Brian Morris saying, "William Jewell and Rockhurst are two of the premier institutions in the Kansas City metro, and we are thrilled to be part of continuing this historical rivalry in a great sports city." Mammoth Sports Construction is a proud partner of the Great Lakes Valley Conference and has done recent work on both campuses, including installing turf and lights on four fields at Jewell this last spring as well as an ongoing facilities study at Rockhurst, which was announced this summer.
