No. 13 Rockhurst suffered its first loss of the season, as Maryville held off the Hawks by a score of 2-1 Friday evening at Bourke Field.
Tied 0-0 in the second half, Maryville opened the scoring with just under 25 minutes remaining as Amanda Kaltwasser tapped in a rebound from four yards out to put the Saints in front. Maryville would double the lead in the 85th minute on a well-struck ball from Alex Johnson from 18 yards out that snuck inside the right post.
Trailing 2-0, the Hawks got on the board in the 89th minute.
Jillian Leetch kept pressure on the Saints on the left sideline, creating chances for Rockhurst. With just over one minute remaining, Leetch set up
Stephanie Ostrander with a nice cross, and Ostrander got the Hawks on the board beating the keeper to the far post.
Maryville was able to run out the clock in the final minute and escape with the narrow victory.
In a well-played match defensively, there were only seven total shots on goal (Maryville 4, Rockhurst 3). Ostrander, Leetch and
Mary Koeller put shots on frame for the Hawks. Goalkeeper
Megan Meyers posted two saves for Rockhurst, including a first half shutout.
Rockhurst (7-1) returns to action at Missouri S&T Sunday (12:00 p.m. kickoff).
