Hawks open season with 1-1 tie at home

The Rockhurst women's soccer team opened the 2018 season with a 1-1 tie against Missouri Southern Friday night at Bourke Field.

The Hawks took a 1-0 lead into halftime behind a goal in the 32nd minute from freshman midfielder Elle Guttmann, who scored on a rebound shot after the Southern goalkeeper stopped a shot by junior midfielder Cathy Rometti. The Lions tied the score on a 12-yard shot by Julia Liberty into the back right of the net in the 51st minute.

Rockhurst outshot the Lions, 25-11. The Hawks posted eight shots in the two 10-minute overtime periods.

Rometti led the Hawks with eight shots and four shots on goal. Hannah Lauer posted six shots and three shots on goal. McKenna Leetch added three shots. Freshman goalkeeper Megan Meyers made three saves.

"Our freshmen did really well and played a lot tonight. We have a lot to build on from this performance," said Rockhurst coach Greg Herdlick.

The Hawks, 0-0-1, host Northwest Missouri State on Sunday (Sept. 2) at 6:00 pm.
