Defense will lead Hawks again heading into season opener

Sophomore forward Cate Sommerhoff scored nine points last season.
The Rockhurst women's soccer team opens the 2018 season Friday night at home against Missouri Southern with the return of nine starters and 20 letterwinners.

Veteran coach Greg Herdlick, who has posted 201 victories in 19 seasons at Rockhurst, is hopeful the Hawks will score more goals in 2018. The Hawks were held to 18 goals last season, including only scoring two goals in their nine losses. Rockhurst suffered six losses by a 1-0 margin while ending the season with a 7-9-1 record.

Sophomore forward Cate Sommerhoff is the leading returning scorer with four goals and nine points. Sophomore midfielder Jillian Leetch finished with two goals and two assists.

The defense will be the strength of the team with three returning starters: senior Abby Zeltmann, junior Colleen Pikus and sophomore Caroline Romme. Senior defender Jessica Smelcer, an All-GLVC honoree in 2016, was limited to five games due to injuries last year. Senior Maddie Dierkes and junior Cathy Rometti bring valuable experience to the midfield. Juniors Rosie Breheny and Maggie Forbes are back after sharing the goalkeeping duties last year.

The top newcomers are redshirt freshman midfielder McKenna Leetch, freshman defender Alex Moss, freshman forward Jae Crandall, freshmen Mia Patterson, sophomore midfielder Haley Schroeder and freshman goalkeeper Megan Meyers.

The Hawks open the conference season on Sept. 14 at home against Quincy.
