Hawks open season with 3-1 win at Missouri Southern

Kaley Nieters tallied one goal and two assists in RU's 3-1 win at Missouri Southern.

Box Score Kaley Nieters scored one goal and assisted on two goals to lead Rockhurst to a season-opening 3-1 victory over Missouri Southern Friday night in Joplin, Mo.

The Hawks took a 1-0 lead less than three minutes into the game on a goal from Maddie Dierkes with an assist from Nieters.

Nieters scored in the 21st minute when she got past the Southern keeper after getting a pass from Mia Zanaboni. Jessica Smelcer scored the third goal in the 56th minute on a rebound shot that came off the crossbar on a shot by Nieters.

Rockhurst finished with 17 shots and nine shots on goal. Freshman midfielder Jillian Leetch led the Hawks with five shots. Nieters added three shots. Sophomore keeper Rosie Breheny collected four saves.

The Hawks (1-0) next play at Northwest Missouri State on Wednesday, Sept. 6.
