Defense powers unbeaten Hawks to 1-0 win at Maryville

Kaley Nieters led the Hawks with five shots.
Box Score A strong defensive effort led Rockhurst to another shutout victory Sunday at Maryville. The 23rd-ranked Hawks blanked the Saints, 1-0, behind an early first-half goal in St. Louis.

The Hawks remain undefeated at 8-0-1 overall and stand alone in second place in the Great Lakes Valley Conference with a 7-0-1 league mark.

Brandi Vollmer scored on a deflection off her corner kick in the 10th minute. It was Vollmer's second goal of the season.

Rockhurst posted 15 shots and 10 shots on goal. Kaley Nieters paced Rockhurst with five shots and three shots on goal. Courtney Silberberg and Meghan Kilkenny collected two shots apiece.

Jessica Smelcer, Colleen Pikus and Cathy Rometti each played 90 minutes on defense in shutting down the Maryville offense. Senior goalkeeper Ali Wallner made two saves to improve her record to 4-0-1.

The Hawks return home to host Quincy on Friday, September 30.
