Rockhurst women claim first GLVC championship

Box Score Rockhurst ended the regular season with a 2-0 victory over William Jewell Wednesday night in Liberty, Missouri, to claim its first ever conference championship.

The 15th-ranked Hawks tied Truman State for first place in the Great Lakes Valley Conference with a 12-1-2 league record.

Rockhurst (15-1-2 overall) is the second seed in the GLVC Tournament and will host seventh-seeded Quincy on Sunday (Oct. 30) at noon.

Jessica Smelcer scored her first goal of the season with an assist from Nicole Keeve to give the Hawks a 1-0 lead in the 30th minute. Keeve came back 18 minutes to notch her first goal of the season.

Rockhurst finished with 23 shots and 12 shots on goal. Kaley Nieters led the Hawks with five shots and three shots on goal. Mia Zanaboni posted four shots and three shots on goal. Smelcer, Keeve and Courtney Silberberg added three shots apiece. Ali Wallner stopped three shots to post her eighth shutout of the season.
