Hawks capture season opener at Newman, 66-64

Mary Dineen led the Hawks with 22 points in a 66-64 win at Newman.

Freshman guard Mary Dineen scored 22 points to lead Rockhurst to a 66-64 season-opening victory over Newman on Saturday in Wichita, Kan.

Dineen scored 12 points in the first half as the Hawks jumped out to a 37-23 halftime lead. She connected on her fourth three-pointer of the game to give Rockhurst a 61-56 lead with 4:06 left in the game. Dineen's two free throws in the final 13 seconds iced the win for the Hawks.

Kendall Hart posted 12 points behind three three-point field goals. Freshman guard Shavonne Brewer added 10 points. Becky Squiers and Lauren Meyers combined for 11 points, 15 rebounds, five assists and three steals. 
Freshman Haleigh Cindrich and Allison Streich came off the bench to add nine points and nine rebounds.

Rockhurst outrebounded Newman 40-32. 
The Hawks, 1-0, host Saint Mary in their home opener on Sunday at 5 p.m.
