Four Hawks earn GLVC postseason awards

Quinton Curry earned All-GLVC Second Team honors.
Four members of the Rockhurst men's basketball team received postseason awards from the Great Lakes Valley Conference prior to the 2019 GLVC Men's Basketball Tournament this week in Edwardsville, Illinois.

Sophomore point guard Curtis Lewis was named to the All-GLVC First Team and sophomore center Quinton Curry earned All-GLVC Second Team accolades. Senior forward Connor Evans was selected to the All-Defensive Team, while freshman forward Nick Volz landed a spot on the All-Freshman Team.

Lewis ranks 10th in scoring (14.8 pg), eighth in assists (3.6 pg) and 13th in assist/turnover ratio in the GLVC. In conference games, he averaged 16.6 points and 3.2 assists per game.

"I am so happy to see Curtis's work ethic and determination pay off this season," said Rockhurst coach Drew Diener. "He finished the season so strong for us and I credit that to his mindset and extra work he puts in throughout the year. After earning (GLVC) Freshman of the Year, he was surely a marked man entering the season.

Lewis was the top freshman in the GLVC last year, averaging 15.9 points and 5.1 assists per game after a standout prep career at Kansas City's Pembroke Hill. Lewis is also Rockhurst's James R. Spalding Sportsmanship Award team recipient.

"There is no question we count on Curtis to generate offense for us," Diener said. "He delivered over and over. With that said, he is such an unselfish player and is a great listener and learner. He has all the traits of a great point guard."

Curry stands 19th in scoring (13.1 pg), eighth in rebounds (6.0 pg) and 11th in field goal percentage (54.3) in the GLVC. In conference games, he averaged 12.4 points per game and 6.1 rebounds per game. The West Des Moines, Iowa native was named to the 2018 All-Freshman Team after averaging 14.5 points and 6.4 rebounds per game.

"There is no question Quinton is one of the great post players in our league," Diener said. "I would assume opposing coaches spend a lot of time figuring out how to guard him. He is strong at the rim, but he can also attack off the block. He has also become a better passer.

"Quinton has developed into a great defensive player as well. He uses his athleticism to hedge ball screens, provide help and guard perimeter players at a high level. In addition, Quinton is a tremendous teammate. He relishes in their success. That is contagious."

This marks the second year in a row that Evans has been named to the All-Defensive Team. The Wichita, Kansas native ranks fourth in blocked shots (1.0 pg) and 10th in steals (1.3 pg) in the GLVC.

"Connor's impact on the defensive end goes beyond his matchup or an individual assignment," Diener said. "His mindset on that end of the floor drives and motivates others to compete on that side of the ball every possession. He is an elite competitor and talker.

"His versatility as a defender allows him to guard point guards through and centers. We called him to do both at various times this year and he delivered. It is rare to find a guy who likes to defend as much as he does; he is a special player."

Volz stands 11th in rebounding (5.7 pg) and third in field goal percentage (62.4 pg) in the GLVC. In conference games, the Bucyrus, Kansas native averaged 10.7 points and 6.4 rebounds per game.

"Nick is unique player. He has a great feel for the game. He has great touch, can pass and finishes in unorthodox ways. His length and anticipation make him a great rebounder.

"Nick was one of the top offensive rebounders in the league and had several in key moments. He is a slippery guy with the ball in his hands, too. He finds a way to get to the rim. He also made some big threes for us this year. He can beat you in many ways."
