A starter at end, Fitzgerald was known for his relentless, aggressive and hard-hitting style of play. He received Central Intercollegiate All-Conference honors in 1949. He caught a touchdown in a memorable upset win over Fort Hays State in a 1948 Homecoming win. Fitzgerald coached at Redemptorist High School and Kansas City Visitation Grade School for 14 seasons, winning eight city championships. He later became an attorney.
