Carney received eight letters in basketball and football. A Little All-American halfback in football, he was chosen as a member of the National College All-Star team in 1940. Carney joined the U.S. Navy and trained as a Naval aviator after graduating from Rockhurst College. He was awarded two Air Medals and a Purple Heart after losing his life in the Marianas Islands as he was shot down by enemy forces in June of 1944.
