Rockhurst captures GLVC Commissioner’s Cup

The Rockhurst University athletic department captured the 2016-17 Great Lakes Valley Conference Commissioner's Cup, the league office announced on Tuesday (May 16).

Rockhurst earned 82 points to claim its first-ever GLVC Commissioner's Cup. The Hawks edged Southern Indiana (79) by three points. Bellarmine (78), Truman State (78) and Missouri-St. Louis (69) round the remainder of the top five.

The Commissioner's Cup is a traveling trophy awarded for performance in the seven core conference championship sports, which include baseball, men's and women's basketball, men's and women's soccer, softball and women's volleyball.

The Hawks qualified for six of the seven core sports' GLVC Championship Tournaments, bringing home the conference title in men's soccer last fall. Rockhurst also finished second in women's soccer, fourth in volleyball and softball, and fifth in women's basketball.

"Winning the GLVC Commissioner's Cup is a tremendous honor for Rockhurst, and is a direct reflection of the dedication and hard work by our coaches and student-athletes," said Rockhurst Director of Athletics Gary Burns. "We came close to achieving our goal of winning the Cup last year, which makes finishing first in the Cup standings this year even more special."

Last year, the Hawks fell six points shy of first-place Indianapolis in second place with 80 points. Rockhurst has garnered the most points (162) over the past two years in the Cup standings.

Rockhurst combined for 53 points in its four women's sports. The Hawks collected 15 points in women's soccer after sharing the regular season title with Truman State. Rockhurst tallied 13 points each in volleyball and softball. The Hawks won the GLVC West crown in volleyball and shared the regular-season softball title with Southern Indiana. Women's basketball added 12 points, finishing second in the GLVC West to earn the No. 5 seed in the GLVC Tournament.

The Commissioner's Cup has had four different institutions claim the award since 2012-13. Prior to Rockhurst winning the Cup this year, Indianapolis picked up its second Cup last year. Drury, Indianapolis and Lewis won the three previous Cups.

Rockhurst will formally receive the Commissioner's Cup at the Enterprise Rent-A-Car GLVC Awards Reception in St. Louis on May 23.
